Markham is a suburban community and is the largest of the 9 communities in York Region. It is home to more than 355,000 residents. It is located in the northeast edge of Metropolitan Toronto, approximately 30 km northeast of Downtown Toronto. Additionally, its proximity to Toronto has been a main contributor to the urbanization of Markham, which can be understood from taking a look at the city’s history.

The city gained its name from John Graves, the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, who had named the community after his friend, William Markham. Much of Markham’s history describes the community as an agricultural one. It wasn’t until the after World War II when the town felt the effects of urban encroachment from Toronto. Moreover, the completion of Highway 404 accelerated Markham’s urban development.

By the 1980s, Markham was recognized as a suburb of Toronto, as it was transformed into a bedroom community. During this period, many companies located their head offices in Markham due to the abundance of land, good transportation routes, and low tax rates. Furthermore, with the accelerated growth of Markham’s population, the rural characteristics of the town is almost completely wiped out.

Because of the number of people that immigrate into Markham, it is a community that represents a full range of human experiences, abilities, and cultural backgrounds. Markham is one of Canada’s most diverse community, which takes pride in hosting multicultural programs. Markham developed the Diversity Action Plan to further strengthen inclusion. Through this initiative, the community hopes to educate its residents and staff about the culture, religion, and the LGBT communities through workshops.

Majority of Markham’s population is made up of East and South Asians. The composition of this population largely influences the planning and design, policies, the food, entertainment, and industrial venues within the city.

Transportation has been made easy in Markham with access to Highway 404 (major expressway), Highway 7, Highway 48, and Highway 407. Moreover, Markham makes facilities more accessible with their use of YRT and Viva.
